We have journeyed through the season of Lent together since Valentine's Day/Ash Wednesday. This Sunday we will reach the beginning of the most Holy Week of the Year in the Christian Tradition. Our siblings in the Muslim faith are in a holy time of year, the month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is marked by fasting, prayer, reflection and community. As we move into our own week of worship, prayer and reflection we remember our siblings who are taking time to observe the practices and traditions of faith. Holy week begins each year with Palm Sunday, this is a day marked by the waving of palm branches and the shouting of "Hosanna!" Hosanna is not a shout of joy or exclamation, like Hallelujah. Instead Hosanna is a call for help. It literally means "Save Us!" This is what the people called out as Jesus entered Jerusalem ahead of the Passover Holiday. "Save us!" People were in great need and they did not see a future with the current leaders neither secular or religious. They were looking for someone new and they hoped against hope that Jesus just might be the new powerful leader they were waiting for. On Sunday we will have palm branches in the garden and we will re-create a parade like the one we read about in the gospels. We will move through the garden waving palm branches and calling out "Hosanna, Save Us!" It sounds strange to those unfamiliar with the tradition and yet it is ancient. The Christian tradition of waving palm branches and shouting hosanna goes back more than 1,700 years. Join us in marking this special day and each of the days of this year's Holy Week.
