Ancient Wisdom

Unusual weather courtesy of the El Niño climate pattern lead us to indoor worship due to rain (unheard of in September) followed by heat and humidity (also an unusual combo for us) caused us to cancel open garden on Tuesday. We are planning to be back in the garden tonight for first Thursday and tomorrow for Open Garden and through the weekend. The transitions in the weather are matching our transitions in the seasons of crops. Our summer crops are on their way out, the tomatoes are producing less, and the winter crops are being planted. This season change means for now there is less produce coming out of the garden. That will change in the coming weeks and moths as the young plants come to maturity and bear fruit. 

This past Sunday while worshiping in doors we had two special rituals take place the first was the annual blessing of the backpacks, prayers for students teachers and the new school year and the second was gifting a Bible to one of our children who has become a capable reader. On Sunday Maia received her first Bible (not the kids version she received when she was young), but an leather bound NRSVUE translation inscribed with her full name, the date and The Garden Church. It was a very special day to celebrate this milestone with her in our community. 

Tonight Rev. Dave is going to lead Theological Thursday in the garden. The theme is "The Power of Belief" as a teaser Rev. Dave writes: "There are sayings of Jesus that are not found in the Bible. These are known as ‘non-canonical’ and yet there is a very good reason to read through them. The way that we interpret the words of Jesus can have a wide ranging effect on how we view the world, the spiritual world, and help to inform our beliefs about God. This month we are exploring not only an important saying attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas, we are also examining how various interpretations informed early Christian belief systems that have lasted hundreds and sometimes over a thousand years. Belief is powerful!" The group gathers at 7pm in the garden, food is provided potluck style. If you have questions or want to know more, contact Rev. Dave. 

Saturday is our first Garden Class of the new program year. This one is focused on using less plastic in the garden and conserving water. The class is free and takes place at 9:30am in the garden. On Sunday we will begin our new sermon series titled "Ancient Wisdom: Reawakening our Souls and healing the world." Inspired by the book "Sacred Earth Sacred Soul" by John Philip Newell we will spend the weeks between now and the start of Advent connecting the Ancient Wisdom found in God's Holy Word with wisdom traditions from around the world as we listen for God's Spirit stirring and resonating with truth in our own souls.
