In The Wilderness

Writer: The Garden ChurchThe Garden Church

We hope you can join us for our annual Ecumenical Ash Wednesday Service at noon in the garden today. The brief service is followed by offering ashes to the community. Anyone is welcome for some or all of the offerings.

Tomorrow is 1st Thursday, and we are looking forward to opening our gates for live music in the garden. If you've never been to a 1st Thursday it is a lovely way to connect with the community. The block is lively and full of people and things happening from food trucks to taiko demonstrations. It's a lovely night to be out and about.

Today begins the season of Lent. This Sunday we'll begin a series titled "Everything Happens" based on the work of Katie Bowler who has the following reflection on this Sunday's reading:

"You don’t have to go very far to find the wilderness, most days we wake-up living in this reality. Things in this world are not as they should be—no matter how hard we try to bright side or have a cheerful attitude. As the Dread Pirate Roberts said in The Princess Bride, “Life is pain, Highness. Anybody who says differently is selling something.” We don’t want to see it, but we need to. That’s why one of our favorite prayers is “God, let me see things as they really are.” So what are we to do here, in the meantime? We’ve been given a template, but it’s not just a formula, it’s a person—Jesus." As we walk through the season of Lent we will follow Jesus' ministry reminding ourselves of the template he left for us to navigate this hard, and beautiful gift of our lives. We hope you can join us.

In Faith,

Rev. Amanda

What We mean when We say All Are Welcome:

At The Garden Church we intentionally welcome all. We do this without requiring adherence to any religious belief or creed. We foster a climate of purposeful inclusion, an environment where all can feel safe, valued, cared for, and given an opportunity to form meaningful connections with the Divine and each other. We cherish the diversity of humanity, a diversity which includes differences in sex, age, race, ethnicity, and national origin, range of abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, financial means, education, and political perspective.

We are also a member Congregation of the Pacific Coast Association of the Swedenborgian Church of North America
