This past weekend many in our community has a first day of the month unlike any other, their was no replenishment of funds on their EBT cards. These cards are part of the CalFresh (Nationally known as SNAP) food assistance program. Needless to say anxiety around food insecurity has been very high since Saturday. At church on Sunday we heard from several people who were concerned by not knowing if and when they would receive their benefits. Thankfully we had just received a generous donation of Meal Replacement bags from St. Mark's Presbyterian Church and were able to offer two bags to all who asked.
In an effort to meet the overwhelming need which has been created by this lapse in food aid, many have stepped up to the plate. Above is a list of places to get food from Council member Tim McOsker's office. Additionally Harbor Connects and LA Cares are working together to help meet needs and fill this gap. The communities providing meals on Sundays are stepping up by brining more servings of food. We are grateful for the generosity.
This weekend Feed and Be Fed is holding its annual Pumpkin Smashing event this year at the Vic and Bonnie Christensen Science Center, also known as the farm (2201 Barrywood Ave). Details on that event are below along with their first ever pie bake off. There's space for more bakers, so please reach out to Judith if you'd like to sign up.
Sunday we're continuing our fall series on faith over fear with a reflection on Psalm 145 how praising God can help conquer fear. We hope to see you soon.
In Faith,
Rev. Amanda
