For All the Saints

There is a common funeral Hymn called "For all the Saints" the lyrics go on to say "who from their labors rest." Last Sunday our downtown San Pedro community streets were filled with 10,000+ people taking part in the annual Día de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead festivities. In the garden (where the first San Pedro Día de los Muertos took place nearly 20 years ago) we welcomed more than 1300 people to remember those who have gone on to the Spiritual realm. Names were inscribed in chalk on the wall and prayed for, names were written on ribbons and tied to a driftwood tree created from found stones and wood collected by board treasurer Reneé and lovingly assembled.
We remembered the members of our own community with an ofrenda assembled by Rev. Jonathan. Activities including and rock painting and exploring the garden. Pastor Connie coordinated the stations, volunteers and planning committee and those who entered left with a seed packet lovingly assembled by Bob Feed and be Fed's very talented musician and board chair. Each seed packet contained a reminder that orange marigolds are the flower of the day because they represent sun, and a guiding path for returning spirits.
This Sunday is All Saint's Day in the Christian tradition and our service will include remembrances of those who have gone on to be with the Lord and reflections on scriptures for the day. We hope to see you in the garden!
In Faith,
Rev. Amanda
