Annual Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Most years in late October our regular Sunday routine is pre-empted by a large gathering (by large I mean 10,000 people!) in downtown San Pedro. Our city blocks are overtaken by community members celebrating the annual Day of the Dead or Día de Los Muertos. It's an international holiday which is traditionally celbrated in the days following Halloween around All Saint's Day, but in LA tends to span several weekends in late October. Traditionally the holiday is for prayer and remembrance of those who have died.
The modern celebrations in Los Angels tend to feel more like a cultural festival and less like a prayer and remembrance time. So we at The Garden Church open the Garden with Feed and be Fed and offer practices of remembrance. This year we're working with POLA High students to invite the placement of monarch butterflies on our fence. We will offer the opportunity to write names of the deceased on our brick wall with chalk as we have in years past, and a ribbon remembrance tree.
If you can't make it to the garden on Sunday but would like a name included please let us know and we'll add it to the wall. As a church community we pray for all the names on the wall throughout the year.
In Faith,
Rev. Amanda
