Lamentations and Hope

Fall is underway which looks like less daylight, and butternut squash busting off the vines. This fall has also brought the uncertainty of the government shutdown which further highlights the deep political divide in our nation. In September our church member Elizabeth led the first book group of the fall and in our discussion on the book "An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture" by John L. McKnight, Peter Block, and Walter Brueggemann our discussion made its way around to lament. The power of Lament. and the biblical witness for Lament.
This week's lectionary happens to include two passages from the book of Lamentations. These passages remind us that when we mourn and lament current situations, our own, our community's our nation's and the world's that we also have hope thanks to the steadfast love of the Lord (Lamentations 3:22). Sometimes all we can do is lament. God knows that too. The psalms are full of examples of the wide range of human emotions including the ones where we are deeply troubled, grieved and full of tears. In this season we are going to intentionally carve out space in our worship for lament. Understanding that the Lord meets us where we are and how we are. Thanks be to God.
We hope you can join us in the garden.
In Faith,
Rev. Amanda
