Since our first days the words "All Are Welcome" have been part of who we are. From our signs to our social media posts, welcoming is core to who we are. Welcome is also core in the Christian tradition. Welcoming the stranger, friend and neighbor alike. Hostiles and hospitals are all based on Christian hospitality, the idea that you welcome some one passing by, or through your area. So each time we are open, we stand at the gates and encourage people passing by to come inside and enjoy.
This weekend in Boston, MA Pastor Connie is taking part in our denomination's Annual Convention of the Swedenborgian Church of North America. Rev. Dave and I attending virtually this year. When attended my first Annual Convention in 2019, during the Council of Minsters meeting we were all asked to give our "elevator speech" about our churches. I knew exactly what to say, because it's what I say every time someone new steps through the gates:
"Welcome to the Garden Church. We have church right here on Sunday afternoons at 4pm. Before that we work together in the garden at 3pm and we have a community meal at 5pm. All are Welcome. The rest of the week, We are open in conjunction with the non-profit Feed and be Fed. We're an all volunteer run communal garden, meaning we work all the beds together. What we grow goes out to the community through the farmer's market on Fridays, through our farm box subscriptions or through people who come in like you did today, "say that mint looks great" and we're happy to harvest for you. The mission of both the church and the non-profit is to "Feed and be Fed in body mind and Spirit."
This Sunday our scripture passage focuses on welcome, reminding us of the importance of welcome and the simple offering of a cup of cold water. We hope to see you in the garden!
In Faith,
Rev. Amanda
